The purpose of supervised or monitored visitation is to make sure that a child can have safe and appropriate contact with a non-custodial parent. Supervision minimizes contact between the parents and prevents the child from being caught in the middle of parental conflicts.
Supervised visits should not be looked on as negative or stigmatized. They are a positive tool, enabling children to maintain a relationship with both parents during the stressful dissolution process. The child is able to anticipate the visit, knowing that nothing bad will happen and they will not be caught up in any parental antagonism.
The custodial parent can be assured that they need have no contact with the non-custodial parent, with whom they may be in conflict. They can relax, knowing that fears they may have about the other parent will not affect the child.
The non-custodial parent can enjoy uninterrupted contact with their children. If any allegations have been made, there is no fear of further allegations with a neutral, third party present to verify what occurs during the visit.
